WA chemist bottles and collectables
In January 1833, George Shenton arrived on the ship Cygnet to the Western Australia colony, and so became Perth’s first pharmacist. During the early 1800s pharmaceutical training was rather random, yet Shenton had documentary evidence of having served an apprenticeship at one of the first pharmacies in Portsea. It is likely he was encouraged to travel to the colonies by his cousin William Shenton who arrived to the Swan River Colony in 1829.
There is some confusion as to where Shenton opened his first pharmacy. The Perth Gazette of May 1838 shows a Hay St address, however it is accepted that he first operated from a shop in William St. With a population of just 400 in Perth things would have been tough for Shenton. However he was an astute business man and quickly became involved in a range of businesses, including the West Australian Bank, the timber trade and wheat farming. His “Chemist and Druggist” business was more like a department store, and his knowledge and qualification made him a highly respected member of the Colony.
The collection gallery of WA chemist bottles and other items is an important record of many of the early chemists who were instrumental in the development of the industry in this state into what it is today.
